B. Balls have been doing a lot of the stripping out in the kitchen and more destructive work.
What
has become apparent is that the cavity insulation is poor, and patchy.
While working in the kitchen Matthew has found the insulation only fills
the cavity to a level 1meter from floor level.
Question is how critical is the cavity fill to your calculations because:
-
Topping up the insulation is complicated, in part because of the amoun
required and the existing insulation apparently has the potential for
reacting with new mineral blown insulation.
- The insulation
companies which have been contacted will not blow insulation into the
cavity of a steel framed building because of the potential for the
boarding on the inside to pop and break up.
- Not only that but now we are pondering the possibility of condensation forming around the steel structure.
=>
Omitting the cavity wall insulation from the PHPP calcualtions actually
made no difference to the final primary energy value and CO2 emissions.

The TSB launched an initiative to Retrofit UK social housing stock in order to meet future targets in reduction of CO2 emissions and energy use. The competition 'Retrofit for the future’, looked for at least 50 demonstrator whole house solutions to improve the performance of the entire property with a goal to make deep cuts in carbon emissions. B Ball Contractors Ltd worked with CEN and Ashford Borough Council in winning the competition and to a successful conclusion.
